PMR529-07 Iraq, Babylon ("Bab El" = "Gate of the Gods"): probably dating from the third millennium BC, capital of southern Mesopotamia under Hammurabi (1792-1750 BC), later the greatest city of its day under Nebuchadnezzar II (604-562 BC): the Lion of Babylon (head missing), sculpted from basalt, devouring a person; this animal is the symbol of the goddess "Ishtar", who would have been riding the lion.
