PMR505-04 Cyprus (North): St. Hilarion Castle, "a picture-book castle for elf-kings" (Rose Macaulay). Named after a seventh-century hermit, the almost impregnable site has been a monastery, a fortress and a royal palace, occupied by Crusaders, Lusignans, Byzantines, Venetians and lastly used as a Turkish retreat from EOKA attacks in 1964.
