PMR665-12 Jordan, Jerash: already settled in Neolithic times, Jerash was later occupied by Greeks and Romans, and the latter are responsible for most of the surviving architecture which dates from 64 BC. By the first/second century AD the town had a population of about 15-20,000 inhabitants and was known as "Gerasa". This picture: the Temple of Zeus, which stands on a prominence dominating the city, was built in about 165 AD, and has been badly damaged by earthquakes. It is under constant (French) restoration.
