Caption: | Germany, Thuringia, Weimar: First mentioned in 975, Weimar reached itscultural zenith in the 18th century under Duchess Anna Amalia, when both Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Friedrich von Schiller among other writers, settled and worked here. Painters Lukas Cranach and Arnold Böcklin were also active here, as was composer Franz Liszt. Usually regarded as the home of German culture. Here: Goethe's "Gartenhaus" in Ilm Park, his favourite retreat, where he lived and wrote from 1776 to 1782. |
