Caption: | Germany, Thuringia, Weimar: First mentioned in 975, Weimar reached itscultural zenith in the 18th century under Duchess Anna Amalia, when both Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Friedrich von Schiller among other writers, settled and worked here. Painters Lukas Cranach and Arnold Böcklin were also active here, as was composer Franz Liszt. Usually regarded as the home of German culture. Here: the Lucas Cranach House in the Market Place, built in 1549 in Renaissance style, where the artist spent the last year of his life (1553). |
