PMR067K-03 Germany, Upper Bavaria, Chiemgau: Schloss Herrenchiemsee, the most magnificent of Ludwig II's palaces, based on Versailles, is to be found on an island in the large Chiemsee (lake) and can only be reached by boat. Begun in 1878, it was never completed due to lack of funds. Closer view of the upper facade, richly decorated with allegorical figures and coats of arms, supported by a row of Ionic columns.
