Here the Minnesänger (troubadours) took part in the famous jousts, recalled in Wagner's opera Tannhäuser. Here Martin Luther studied before translating the New Testament. It was the seat of the dukes of Saxe-Eisenach until 1741 when it was ceded to the house of Saxe-Weimar. The castle is perched on a rocky spur overlooking the town of Eisenach.
