PMR092K-08 Macedonia, Bitola: the ruins of Heraclea Lyncestis, a Greek town probably founded by Philip II of Macedon in the 4th century BC as Lynkestis. During the Roman period it was an important town on the Via Egnatia. In the Byzantine period the town was an important episcopal centre, but was sacked by Ostrogoth/Visigoth forces led by Theodoric the Great in 472 and 479 AD. In the 6th century AD it fell to the Slavs after successive attacks. Here: part of the mosaic in the Large Basilica, showing a lion and a bull. Part of this mosaic appears on the reverse side of the Macedonian 5000 denari banknote issued in 1996.
