Caption: | Libya, Tripolitania: ruins of the ancient city of Sabratha, foundedabout 500 BC as a Phoenician trading post, later being Romanised after Carthage fell to the Romans in the Third Punic War in 146 BC. It reached its peak under the Emperor Septimius Severus in the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD, but was severely damaged in an earthquake in 365 AD. After the Arab conquest it lost all importance to Leptis Magna. Here: the Curia (Senate House), with wide steps for the chairs of the magistrates. |
