The present fortress was started about 1200 and remained the seat of the Prince-Bishops until 1719. It was remodelled into a Renaissance palace by Julius Echter from about 1600. The fortress was stormed by the Swedes in 1631 and the 600-man garrison was massacred. View with part of the bridge over the River Main.
