 Germany, Bavaria, Wurzburg: castle gardens in the Marienberg Fortress, probably laid out by Prince-Bishop Johann Philipp von Schönborn (1642-73). An identical curved staircase with ballustrades encloses the garden at each end. The fortress was stormed by the Swedes in 1631 and the 600-man garrison was massacred.
