After about 400 AD the empire expanded to take in large parts of present-day Peru, Bolivia and Chile on the west coast. Their success was based on highly effective agricultural innovation. In about 1000 AD the civilisation was virtually wiped out by continuing drought, the remnants being incorporated into the Inca empire around 1450 AD. These people had no written language and their name is unknown.

The famous Puerta del Sol or Sun Gate, carved from a single block of Andesite, 2 metres high and 4 metres wide, cracked by lightning and held together with metal clamps. The central relief is Viracocha, God of Creation, head surrounded by rays of the sun.
