Preah Ang Chang-han Hoy, a monk revered to this day, lived here, and according to legend, when his small boat was attacked by sharks it broke into two pieces, the prow containing the monk miraculously returning to the monastery. In the Byzantine period the town was an important episcopal centre, but was sacked by Ostrogoth/Visigoth forces led by Theodoric the Great in 472 and 479 AD.
