The town has been famous for its red wines and also tobacco for centuries. In 1900 the town had about 20,000 inhabitants; today just 245 live here. Here: Kordopuolos Kashta (House), built in 1754 (top) belonged to a famous wine merchant. It is reputed to have been the largest and most luxurious house in Bulgaria.
