Caption: | Romania, Wallachia, Bucharest: Ceausescu's "Palace of the People", reputed tobe the largest building in the world after the Pentagon, contains over 7000 rooms and several assembly halls. It was built to house both houses of parliament, all principal government ministries, conference centres, as well as the president's own suite. Only the best craftmen were allowed to work on the project. The cost so far (1998) amounts to US$3.3 billion. Front view from the Boulevardul Unirii, with one of the fountains playing. |
