Caption: | Greece, Island of Paros: entrance to the ancient marble quarryat Marathi where up to 150,000 slaves were employed in Roman times. Parian marble was renowned for its high quality and it was used for many famous sculptures, including the Venus de Milo, Hermes, the Temple of Athena at Delphi and the Tomb of Napoleon. Its opacity was graded at 7 cm, compared with 1.5 cm for other marbles. |
