Caption: | Peru, Cusco, Machu Picchu: ruins of a pre-Colombian Inca sitesituated 2430 metres a.s.l. on a ridge above the Urubamba River (the Inca "Sacred Valley"). Sometimes called "The Lost City of the Incas" because it was not found by the Spanish invaders. Begun in 1430 AD, it was abandoned before completion for reasons which are not yet clear. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983.This doorway was the only entrance to the city and could easily be defended. |
