Caption: | England, Somerset, Wells: the cathedral, building of which began in1175 and continued after its consecration in 1239. It has retained a large part of its Early English architecture in addition to the later Gothic. The first church was built here in 705, but the adjacent mineral "wells" were in use in Roman times.Closer view of the central west front, which has the largest collection of carved figures in Europe. Begun in 1230, these were at first painted in bright colours. |
